      Elevate your career with RPL

Turn Your Experience Into a Qualification You Already Deserve

Years on the job teach you things no classroom can. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the pathway that lets you formalise that knowledge — converting hands-on skills and industry experience into a nationally recognised qualification, without starting your learning from scratch.

Chances are, if you’ve spent real time working in your field, you’re carrying more practical know-how than someone fresh out of TAFE. RPL exists to recognise that. Instead of sitting through coursework covering ground you’ve already mastered, you’re assessed on what you can actually do — the competencies you’ve built through real work.

RPL.com.au works with a broad network of registered training organisations (RTOs) across Australia to assess your background — including overseas qualifications — against the requirements of a nationally recognised credential. In many cases, the evidence you already have (job history, references, work samples, prior training) is enough to complete the assessment, meaning little or no extra study is required.

If your skills are ahead of your paperwork, RPL is how you close that gap.

Talk to us about your goals. We’ll match your career experience to qualifications available through our partnered RTOs.

      2. Portfolio of Evidence

Your dedicated consultant will guide you in building a portfolio that demonstrates your skills. This may include:
      • Previous qualifications and transcripts
      • Photos or videos of your work
      • Work samples and references
      • Your resume and employment history

      3. Evidence Review

One of our partnered RTOs will assess your portfolio. If extra evidence is needed, the assessor will guide you. Where skills gaps exist, training support may be provided so you can complete the requirements.

      4. Get Certified!

Once your evidence is approved, you’ll receive a nationally recognised qualification issued by a partnered RTO, equivalent to what you’d earn through full-time study. These qualifications are also valid for licensing applications.

      Frequently Asked Questions

A standard course delivers training and then assesses you. RPL skips straight to assessment — it measures what you can already do against the same Units of Competency, so you’re not sitting through content you’ve already mastered on the job.

Yes. RPL doesn’t require your original certificates. If you hold a past qualification but have lost the paperwork, your assessor can advise other ways to verify it — and in many cases, your current work evidence is enough on its own.

It’s rarely all-or-nothing. Where your evidence demonstrates competence in some units but not others, your RTO can recognise the units you’ve met and set out targeted training to close the remaining gaps, rather than starting the whole qualification from scratch.

Most RTOs will talk through your experience with you before you formally enrol, to give you a realistic view of your eligibility. Ask us about our current process when you get in touch.

It varies by qualification and by how quickly you can pull your evidence together. Some people are assessed within weeks; others take longer if they need to build up a more complete portfolio. Your assessor can give you a realistic timeframe once they understand what you already have.

Yes — RPL can recognise overseas training and experience against the equivalent Australian qualification. Note that this is separate from a skills assessment required for a visa application, which is carried out by a designated assessing authority for your occupation. If you need a skills assessment for migration purposes, check the specific requirements with the Department of Home Affairs or your relevant assessing authority.

Yes. It’s issued by an RTO registered with the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) against the same national training package, so it carries the same standing as a qualification completed through classroom-based study.

If your evidence doesn’t meet the requirements, your RTO will tell you which units still need more evidence or some targeted training — it’s a next step, not necessarily a dead end.

In many states, holding a nationally recognised qualification is one of the requirements for a trade licence. Licensing rules differ from state to state, so it’s worth confirming the exact requirements for your trade with your state’s licensing authority alongside your RPL assessment.

Costs depend on the qualification, the RTO, and how much assessment and support you need. Get in touch for a quote specific to your situation.

Broadly, anyone with relevant industry experience can apply, regardless of age or how they built their skills — though each qualification has its own entry requirements, which your assessor will walk you through.

Get in touch to talk through your experience and the qualification you’re after. From there, we’ll outline what evidence to gather and map out your pathway to a nationally recognised qualification.
