      Builders Licence Requirements in Tasmania

Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS), part of the Department of Justice, manages builder licensing in Tasmania. You must be registered before you can operate as a building practitioner in the state.

The core “Builder” licence has sub-classes of Domestic, Low Rise, Medium Rise and Open, each tied to a different qualification level:

      • Open — Advanced diploma or degree in Building and Construction.
      • Medium Rise — Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) (CPC50220).
      • Low Rise — Certificate IV in Building and Construction (CPC40120).

Tasmania also licenses two related specialist builder classes — Fire Protection Services Builder and Demolisher — each with its own scope of work.

      • If you hold a relevant trade qualification (such as carpentry or bricklaying), you’ll need a minimum of 2 years’ supervised practical experience in your scope of work.
      • If you don’t hold a trade qualification, you’ll need a minimum of 4 years’ supervised practical experience.

At least half of this experience must have been gained after you were awarded your minimum qualification, and above the level of any lower builder licence you may already hold. Builders, fire protection services builders and demolishers also need $5 million in public liability insurance.

      Your application should include:

      • Completed Building Practitioner Application (via the CBOS website)
      • Curriculum vitae
      • Copies of your existing qualifications
      • A statement of experience
      • Two detailed references
      • Proof of insurance
      • The registration fee
